By Henry James

Vacationing in Europe along with her family members, Daisy Miller, an exquisitely attractive younger American lady, provides her fellow-countryman Winterbourne with a problem he can't get to the bottom of. Is she intentionally flouting social conference within the outspoken method she talks and acts, or is she easily blind to these conventions? while she moves up an intimate friendship with an urbane younger Italian, her flat refusal to watch the codes of first rate behaviour go away her perilously uncovered. In Daisy Miller James created his first nice portrait of the enigmatic and dangerously self reliant American lady, a determine who could come to dominate his later masterpieces.

They were now moving steadily down the river, passing the dark shapes of ships at anchor, and London was a swarm of lights with a pale yellow canopy drooping above it. There were the lights of the great theatres, the lights of the long streets, lights that indicated huge squares of domestic comfort, lights that hung high in air. No darkness would ever settle upon those lamps, as no darkness had settled upon them for hundreds of years. It seemed dreadful that the town should blaze for ever in the same spot; dreadful at least to people going away to adventure upon the sea, and beholding it as a circumscribed mound, eternally burnt, eternally scarred.

She fell into a deep pool of sticky water, which eventually closed over her head. She saw nothing and heard nothing but a faint booming sound, which was the sound of the sea rolling over her head. While all her tormentors thought that she was dead, she was not dead, but curled up at the bottom of the sea (p. 331). Although Rachel appears to feel safe and cocooned in her symbolic sea, she is in fact teetering on the verge of death. Ultimately she does die, of course, but is this an actual choice 舒 opting for death over marriage 舒 or does Rachel simply become overwhelmed by her illness and lose her will to live?

Later that year, Virginia moved with her siblings Vanessa, Thoby, and Adrian to a house in the Bloomsbury section of London. There Thoby began holding informal gatherings of his Cambridge friends. Known as the Bloomsbury group, this legendary artistic circle included artist Clive Bell, economist John Maynard Keynes, and writers Lytton Strachey and E. M. Forster. It was within this group that Virginia met novelist Leonard Woolf, whom she married in 1912. In 1917 Virginia and Leonard founded Hogarth Press, which they ran from their home.
