Ryan et al. (1987) focused their work on juvenile sexual offenders. They suggest that when a male is victimized he is more likely to internalize guilt over his weakness and may express anger and powerlessness.

This is true for physical and emotional abuse as well as sexual abuse. In adults this problem with identity may be revealed in suicide attempts (Briere and Runtz 1986), sexual adjustment problems (Finkelhor et al. 1989), eating disorders (Waller 1994; Waller, Ruddock and Cureton 1995), dissociation (Spanos 1994) and psychosomatic complaints (Scarinci et al. 1994). Like Bagley and Thurston, Friedrich (1995) has also discovered that abused children have difficulties with attachment, emotional problems due to the disregulating effect of trauma, and difficulties with identity or sense of self.
